Isabel describes herself as “built-in” legal counsel to the Taiwanese Civic Tech organisation g0v — she’s been with them since its very beginning.

Right from the start, g0v has encountered many legal challenges, each of which had to be overcome.

In analysing and reflecting on these cases, legal frameworks were discovered to be a vital factor in g0v’s development. From the free software community to Creative Commons Licenses, Open Data and open government — each provided a framework that was fundamental to g0v’s own success.

But it’s not just a one-way street: at the same time, the development of Civic Tech and the growth of its associated community have fed back into the legal system, affecting the evolution of laws.

Discover more about the legal experiments that helped foster the Civic Technology community in Taiwan; decisions the g0v founders made in the early stages of the organisation, and how these decisions have continued to have resonance; and what legal experiments g0v plan to stage in the future.
