How do we check that well-meaning grants are doing everything they were intended to?
Sindhupalcheck was an intervention that engaged citizens to monitor a house reconstruction programme in Sindupalchowk, Nepal.
An NGO was offering financial grants and visits from an engineer to support homeowners rebuilding their own homes. Sindhupalcheck, a real-time mobile app, allowed volunteer monitors to report progress on the houses; the information was uploaded in real-time to a public website which was also accessible to the NGO.
Through the app, volunteer monitors highlighted problems that were hindering the reconstruction effort — problems that otherwise would have been unknown.
