Civic Tech is no longer a new phenomenon, and we're now at the point where we can take a long view on its history and efficacy. In this keynote, Tiago presents an overview of the use of technology as a means to enhance democratic processes, highlighting how they have often failed to meet the expectations of their time.
Then, against this context, we return to present times, with the results of research assessing current civic technology efforts and their effects on participation, inclusiveness, and governmental action.
The keynote concludes with an outline of potential alternative research agendas to address both persisting and emerging issues, ranging from low government responsiveness to algorithmic accountability.
