There is a huge demand for housing in the UK's capital city, and the Mayor has committed to significantly increasing housing delivery to address London’s housing crisis.
However, one of the key barriers to further development is public understanding of development proposals and the true impacts these might have. Evidence suggests that 45% of the UK's population are unable to read a plan.
As a result, residents can often end up objecting to a development they would have been happy to support, if they had been better able to fully visualise what was proposed. And improving people’s understanding of development proposals is equally important as improving the user experience and opportunity to participate in the planning process.
In March 2020, the SME 3D Repo was declared winner of the Mayor of London’s Civic Innovation Challenge in the ‘Democratising Planning’ category.
Since this time 3D Repo has been working with planners at the Greater London Authority on developing and testing the tool, a planning portal based on the 3D Repo Digital Construction Platform and using game engine technology — and it is now progressing forward to become a live project for London.
