Discover WeVis' path to launching Parliament Watch, an open-source comprehensive platform that serves as a one-stop solution for monitoring Thailand's parliament — and the challenges they faced along the way. Inspired by platforms like TheyWorkForYou and GovTrack, but adapting them to Thailand's own political landscape, the initiative aims to increase political transparency.

Longer description:

WeVis, a pioneering civic technology initiative in Thailand, is dedicated to empowering citizens through open data and digital participatory tools. Over the past five years, the organisation has evolved from a group of dedicated young volunteers into a dynamic force for democratic engagement.

One of their most significant endeavours has been the development of a parliamentary monitoring tool — an innovation previously nonexistent in Thailand. Inspired by platforms like TheyWorkForYou and GovTrack, with the hope of increasing political transparency, WeVis embarked on this journey in 2019, adapting these platforms to Thailand’s political landscape.

Despite a lack of experience and knowledge in the area, they created TheyWorkForUS as an MP tracker, Law Watch as a bill tracker, and Promise Tracker as a policy tracker.

They encountered the challenges of inadequate parliamentary data and the complexity of the legislative process, but persevered, conducting extensive research and developing strategies to address these obstacles. They engaged in policy advocacy to promote Freedom of Information, devised automated tools to convert paper-based data into machine-readable formats, and crafted scripts to compile legislative documents.

WeVis now announce the launch of Parliament Watch, an open-source comprehensive platform that serves as a one-stop solution for monitoring Thailand’s parliament.
