Forget online deliberation: there’s a better role for digital technology

Experience shows that it’s near impossible to create high quality deliberation online — so we should stop trying.

To make it routine to involve real people in political decisions, we need digital engagement — but not, as previously assumed, to enable online debate. Digital technology should support the real-life deliberation happening offline.

Deliberative experiments like citizens’ assemblies are often one-offs, but they could be embedded in how our systems work — an approach that will outlive changes in governments, and make sure people’s voices are heard.
